Brewers 5U Practice Plan

Phase 1: Warmup & Focus

0:00 - 0:08

5m Stretch: Ease in, get sillies out, and check for proper gear.

3m Huddle: Instill the "3 S's"โ€”Safety, Sportsmanship, and Success. Talk about being a Brewer: we are creative, we are brave, and we are constantly learning new ways to hit, field, throw, and run. Most importantly: We are here to have fun!

Coach Note: Keep the energy high and the talking points brief to match their 5U attention spans.

Phase 2: Diamond Dogs

0:08 - 0:15

Full team sprints around the bases starting at home. Crucial: Boys must cheer their teammates to earn their turn to run.

Coach Note: Must touch every base including home; otherwise, times are not recorded.

Phase 3: SWING-DROP-RUN

0:15 - 0:25

Set home plate and 1st base 30ft apart. Batter swings (with or without ball/tee), immediately drops the bat, and sprints to 1st.

Coach Note: Instills the fundamental transition from batter to runner. Watch for: dropping the bat vs. throwing it.

Phase 4: Maddux Drill (1-3)

0:25 - 0:35

Line up players at P, 1B, 3B, SS, and RF. Coach hits grounders to the pitcher. Pitcher fields and throws to 1st. Repeat 3x then rotate.

Coach Note: Focus on the pitcher's ready position and the immediate hand-off to 1st base.

Phase 5: The Closing Ceremony

0:35 - 0:40

Final review of the day's successes. Hand out Baseball Cards (Rewards) to all participating players.

Closing Chant: Bring everyone together for one big huddle. Hand on 3...

The "Pizza Slice" Stance

Beginner 5U

Objective: Establish a solid foundation for hitting.

Instruction: Teaching kids to spread their feet like a pizza slice for stability at the tee.

Coach Note: Make sure they bend their knees slightly! Keep checking their feet before every swing.

Alligator Hands

Beginner 5U-7U

Objective: Safely field ground balls with two hands.

Instruction: Using two hands to "chomp" the ball when fielding grounders. One hand on bottom (glove), one on top (bare hand).

Coach Note: Have them make a "chomp" sound as they catch it. It keeps them engaged and reinforces using both hands.

SWING-DROP-RUN

Beginner T-Ball

Objective: Instilling the fundamental hit-to-run sequence.

Instruction: Set home plate and 1st base 30ft apart. Batter swings (with or without ball/tee), immediately drops the bat, and sprints to 1st.

Coach Note: A major challenge in T-Ball is understanding the transition from batter to runner. This drill builds that instinct through repetition.

Maddux Drill (1-3)

Beginner T-Ball

Objective: Fielding grounders as a pitcher and immediately throwing to first.

Instruction: Line up players at P, 1B, 3B, SS, and RF. Coach hits/throws grounders to the pitcher. Pitcher fields and throws to 1st. Repeat 3x then rotate positions.

Coach Note: Technique focus: Pitcher should stay on their feet with knees bent. 1B coach must ensure the 1st baseman is fully attentive and ready to catch.

Diamond Dogs

Beginner All Ages

Objective: Base running speed and team encouragement.

Instruction: Full team sprints around the bases starting at home. Crucial: Boys must cheer their teammates to earn their turn to run.

Coach Note: First base coach and third base coach should watch closely how boys run the bases. Instruct them if they are not rounding. Must touch every base including home; otherwise, times are not recorded.
